Coastal saline soil is the soil which its amount of salinity is high enough to be dangerous for economic crops. Such soil is found in the coastal where the sea is reached.

How to observe coastal saline soil

          1. The area is not far for the coast and it had been reached by the sea.
          2. Find white salt deposit scattered in soil surface or the soil texture is broken. Since consisting of Sodium carbonate, the soil amount increase when it is wet. In some area , the soil is dense and the area is left empty.
          3. There are salt tolerant plants such as Myrsinaceae, mangrove, atap, sea blite, Sonneratia, salt tolerant grass growing in the area.
          4. Some of plants in the area are died because of soil salinity. Its leaves are burned and its appearance is small.
          5. If the taste of water and soil is brackish or the water becomes brown, it is dangerous for plant.

Reclamation of coastal saline soil

          1. Reclamation the area for permanent planting
1.1 Build the dike to prevent the sea and keep fresh water. There should be the way to drain water.
1.2 Dig the waterway for the drainage. In the lowland, draw water for the drainage. Add chemical if the soil does not allow water to percolate.
1.3 There should be much rainfall in the reclaimed area. Or else, the water is available for planting.
1.4 Leach the soil with water and select salt tolerant plant for growing.
In this method, it takes much money to build polder and it is in the time of experiment. The problem is the availability of water source for planting.

          2. Planting in the normal environment. Salt tolerant plants could be planted in brackish water area without waiting for clear soil. Such plants are coconut palm,Mimusops, Hibiscus, guava, camachile, tamarind, nim, sesbania , pine, eucalyptus, malabar almond. Without fresh water, farm crops and truck crops can not be planted.

          3. Reclamation the area for being consistent with natural resource
3.1 Shrimp farm and Fish farm Select plain area with clay suitable for holding water. There is the waterway bringing water to the farm. There is no toxic substance in seawater or brackish water. There should be enough germ of shrimp and fish and their food in the water.
3.2 Mangrove forest There should be some canals for water flowing pass by. It is plain or coastal area easy for the sea reach. Sea sediment is perfectly accumulated.
3.3 Salt farm In farm, there should be clay which is dense and less sea animal which makes a hole in the soil. Salinity in soil is high and the way to take salinity from the sea is available. There is long dry period. An amount of rainwater at least 1,000 mm. and the rain falls in a short period. It is convenient to transport salt to the market and there should be the dike located between salt farm and paddy-field.
3.4 To support keeping animal because such activity does not concern saline soil application and it takes less water than planting.
3.5 If the area situated in living place or industrial area, make sure for the safety of water and environment. Otherwise, all activities above can not be done.
