Thailand’s National World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) Commemoration for 2013
On the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertificationon 17 June 2013, the Land Development Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives which is the UNCCD National Focal Point, organized a seminar to celebrate this special day, in order to raise awareness of desertification, land degradation and drought. This WDCD celebration was held for stakeholders consisting of public agencies, private agencies, mass media, CSOs and farmers. There were 120 participants at the seminar; activities at the seminar consisted of both lectures and a panel discussion. The importance of land resources for food security, the economics of land degradation, and the water situation of Thailand were the key topics. The lectures and panel discussions focused on the role of stakeholders, with the understanding that the participants would gain knowledge, new perspectives, and actively share their views to improve the works of UNCCD. Finally, the Dryland Champions certificates were presented to the awardees of the project in the year 2013.
