Soil Profiles

Generally from the surface the earth is seen in two dimensions - length and breadth. But when we dig down , we see the thrid demension the depth or thickness of the soil layer. When viewing the soil profile , the accumulation of soil layers showing differences in soil color , texture and type of soil material are clearly visible. These different layers running parallel to the soil surface are referred to as "soil horizons."

To help visitors to differentiate soil from various regions , soil profiles from different areas of country are on display , along with descriptions of the relatonship between the locations where such soil are found and their landform or morphology , and parent materials. These presentations offer visitors a clear picture of how various soils were formed.

The Museum displays soil profiles representing all major soil types occurring in Thailand. Soil types have been classified by LDD based on the lowest lavel of soil taxonomy - "soil series". Currently , more than 240 soil series have been documented in Thailand.
